How to keep your skin hydrated: 8 simple habits

Central heating, cold wind and hot showers all pull water out of your skin. The good news is that small daily habits make a big difference.

8 habits that help

You do not need a 12-step routine. Start with these:

  • Wash with lukewarm water, not hot.
  • Use a gentle, creamy cleanser instead of a foaming one if your skin feels tight.
  • Apply moisturiser to damp skin within a minute of washing.
  • Look for hyaluronic acid or glycerin to draw water in, and ceramides to keep it there.
  • Wear SPF every day, even in winter.
  • Exfoliate gently once or twice a week, not every day.
  • Run a humidifier or keep a bowl of water near the radiator in winter.
  • Drink water through the day and go easy on alcohol.

Dry skin or dehydrated skin?

Dry skin lacks oil. It often feels rough and can flake.

Dehydrated skin lacks water. It can still be oily, but it looks dull and shows fine lines more.

Most people have a bit of both in winter. Hydrating ingredients help either way.

When to get some help

A steam facial gives a deep cleanse and leaves skin softer and brighter. It is a nice reset if your skin feels congested and dull.

If dehydration keeps coming back despite good habits, ask about skin boosters at a consultation. They work on hydration from within the skin.
